Johor Bahru Old Chinese temple 柔佛古廟

Johor Bahru Old Temple is a Chinese Temple located downtown on Jalan Trus. This building is said to be about 130 years old, making it one of the oldest structures in Johor Bahru. This is a place of worship that symbolises the unity of the 5 main Chinese dialect or ethnic groups, namely “Teochew”, “Hokkien”, “Cantonese”, “Hakka” and “Hainan”. This temple was constructed in the 19th century by some Chinese community leaders. However, there is no documentation that records the actual completion time of the building. Some says that the century old bronze bell and the plaque that remains in the temple shows that the temple is about 130 year old. The Old Temple is probably most visited on its annual Chinngay, or the Parade of Deities. The parade spreads over 4 days and attracts more than 300,000 people to march around the roads together with the 5 Deities worshipped in the temple. It is so famous for the parade that the temple was featured in a documentary series called My Roots in the episode “Grand March with the Deities”.
